Trumatising Yellow Smoke... Tuesday, November 17, 2009 I had not felt that close in touch to chemistry for a long time...
I was feeling hungry quite often yesterday. Ate 2 french loaf slices of garlic bread in the morning and left the other 2 sitting in my lock and lock container. Then comes teatime... my colleague xueren decided to make soup while i thought i can heat up my garlic bread... so off we went to the pantry at the other side. I had already toasted my bread in the morning and did not wanna toast it for a 2nd time.. so i thought i should microwave it instead... together with my lock and lock container... afterall it's microwavable right? Did thought of checking the temp limit but did not think too much about it since heating time was only 1 minute... but disaster struck in less than half the time. One moment we can still see the bread sitting in the oven, the next moment we turned our heads, yellow smoke was emitting! WTH! Trumatising moment. I was half afraid that an explosion will occur. Mustering up my courage, i took the table cloth and opened up the oven door. Yellow fumes started spewing out and the pungent smell travelled it's way out to the cubicles... all the way to the end where our cubes are... those sitting in close proximity popped by to check out the business... gosh... talk about an embarrasing moment... 真是丟臉死了。。。cleared the mess from the oven... toast was black... part of the plastic container turned soft. The idea of the toxic suffocating smoke floating around is enough to give me the jitters. We walked back to our own cluster with the smell of the smoke in our hair, and 一張笑嘻嘻的臉。 Xue Ren related our story to a few others who happened to be gathered at one of the cubes... Me? Too stunned for words. Face red. Squatted down and hide my face behind the cubical wall... The burnt toast don't really matter anymore... I was full after inhaling the smoke... Told my frens abt it... meng said it sounded like i was doing expt in the chem lab... i thought so too... but i encountered nothing half as trumasting in the chem lab... and wanling asked if firemen came... lucky it was NOT that serious... come to think of it, lucky the smoke alarm didn't sound. Given the amount of smoke floating about. Xueren was nice to console me not to be so trumatised, that it's normal to get food burnt. My reply was yeah, but it's not common to see yellow smoke coming out... nonetheless, goodwill much appreciated =). I remembered sometime ago, my ex-colleague Chicky (who has left) and I decided to have hot coke. Since there's no stove, 2 methods available are the hot water bath and microwave. We didn't have any thing to hold the hot water, so we're left with the microwave method. I remembered we went to google if it's safe to microwave coke, for fear of an explosion... everything went well back then... but it seems that a few months later, i find myself in a smoky situation that i wanted to avoid! Guess i'll not be touching the microwave ovens at work anytime soon! I read online that such smell can linger for quite sometime... wonder if it'll still be around when i return to office tml. Haiz.

Saturday, November 14, 2009 Off to Batam for the weekend! Be back on sunday :) || 12:06 AM || comment || Trip to Bird Park Saturday, November 7, 2009 Bright and early on Halloween day, I was out by 8.30am, travelling to the west to visit the birds. Ok lah, it wasn't that bright, quite grey... which was good, means that we don't have to be baked by the hot sun. I wasn't very keen to see the birds all along, especially I had been there twice 3 years ago for filming of the MNO video. Anyway, since there's free passes this time round, I just went ahead. After travelling and breakfast, we reached the birdpark at around 11am. There were lotsa photographers at the birdpark. One of them offered to take a pic for us at the entrance.
There was this segment with the high pithced talking and singing parrot. Not that i wanted to be skeptical, but it really sounded like a voice recording =x Next up, photospot at a 'human bird cage'.
Swan Lake
Nothing much to see at the birdpark actually... maybe cos i'm not a bird lover and i know nothing much about them. Haha. We started our journey of exploration at 11am and managed to finish around 2pm? The exhibits towards the end were mostly caged up and less appealing. Nonetheless, it's still a nice trip overall. The outing was ended with dim sum lunch at Ah Yat Seafood resturant in the vicinity. Haha... yes, dim sum at a seafood resturant. I've thought ah yat was an expensive place, but after 50% discount, it was only $11 per pax for nearly 10 plates of dim sum? The dim sum was only average though, but worth it with the discount. Labels: Ah Yat, Dim Sum, Jurong Bird Park || 10:54 PM || comment || When the stove runs out of gas, there's still the oven. Wednesday, November 4, 2009 MacDonald's Sausage Mcmuffin and tea cost $2.50. Sausage Mcmuffin with egg (without the tea costs $3.85). $1.35 more to replace the tea for an egg. Considering that a cup of tea in Mac cost more than a dollar (can't rmb the exact price), the price diff is like more at least $2.35? That's almost the cost of the meal... Haha... tho it's just a simple egg... but it adds alot more flavour to the burger. And makes the meal more wholesome too. I've always told myself that if i have the chance, i'll da bao the burger on a weekday and fry the egg myself... which is what i attempted to do today when i'm on leave =D But alas... the stove was out of gas! Not a very smooth 1st attempt... as i asked the mac staff not to add water to the tea, i had to boil some water myself at home too... but with the gas supply cut and me not knowing how to change to a new tank, the hot tea is replaced with cold choc milk and i might have to give up the idea of adding my own egg. However, an idea came... using the egg ring from daiso... i've decided to cook the egg using the oven!
The egg toasted from the oven is yummy. Haha... the egg ring gives the thickness same as the ones from Mac. And it also helps to make the egg stay in place on the oven tray. I can't decide if it's more convinent cooking it in the oven tho. I could have make my hot tea too... by boiling water using the microwave... but somehow i dun really like the idea of drinking microwaved water. || 11:25 PM || comment || Zhou's Kitchen High Tea Buffet Sunday, October 25, 2009 Last min decision to dine at Zhou's Kitchen for their high tea buffet sometime end sept. There was some ktv promo at clementi kbox, which explains why i was willing to travel all the way to Jurong point... THe high tea buffet ends at 5, but we only entered at 345... really short makan time. I thought it was a dim sum buffet... but realised it's more of chinese buffet.
Overall the buffet is not bad but not delicious enough to make me crave for a 2nd visit... high tea only cost less than $13 per pax, much cheaper than the lunch buffet which is over $20++? But then for high tea, the variety is quite limited. Labels: Zhou's Kitchen || 9:47 PM || comment || Istana Open House Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Finally had the chance to visit the Istana during the Hari Raya Puasa open house. The place is simply lots and lots of greenery...
We went further in to the fountain and state house area.
![]() Outside the statehouse We paid $2 to enter the statehouse... some aircon under the hot weather! Anyway the statehouse seems to be the only place with exhibits... though only a small area. The other places are just patches and patches of green...
Finished exploring istana rather early... it was only 4 plus... after walking around PS for awhile... we went to popeyes at flyer for early dinner.
More food follows... haha... as there's 50% off cakes in cartel from 9pm onwards...
We're really good at spending one whole day out even tho there's nothing to do... walking here and there aimlessly... even visiting harvey norman to pass sometime while waiting for 9pm to come. Labels: Istana || 9:33 PM || comment || |
